Lasik Surgery
For those of us without perfect vision, would this not be a very important procedure to have before tshtf? I know many are concerned of long term effects, however they have been doing this surgery for quite awhile now haven't they? I don't really hear much negativity about it. Should I be saving up for it?

Re: Lasik Surgery
I had it done in 1998. One of the best things I ever did for myself. Had absolute awful vision since I was a kid. Could not see anything 6 inches from my nose. It was simply amazing to be able to see. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Re: Lasik Surgery
BIG FAN, I HAD IT DONE OCT 2002 WHEN I WAS GOING TO IRAQ.(could not imagine contact lenses in the desert.)

Re: Lasik Surgery
glasses and contacts are a liability if the SHTF. My wife and I are discussing me having it done in 09... if the poo splattering tarries. In fact, I've begun seeing the Doc. (at least on my own terms) a bit more lately to try to get some old troubles worked out. - gotta be tip top when there is limited med help.

Re: Lasik Surgery
I had mine done I believe in 2001. My vision didn't come out perfect like other people, it is like 20/40. But that's a lot better than what I had my whole life up to that point.
I am glad I did the procedure and I would do it again without hesitation. Glasses were deteriorating my vision making it worse and worse. |
Re: Lasik Surgery
I recommend this to anyone considering it. But don't go cheap. Get custom LASIK if at all possible. My vision was 20/500. Corrected to 15/20. 7 years without glasses or contacts has been a godsend, compared to the 23 year of near legal blindness.

Had mine done back in 98. Best doc in town. $4k. Astigmatic all my life. The newer procedure doesn't cut the surface of the eye I'm told. |
Re: Lasik Surgery
Eyes don't mix with lasers and scalpels. I trust this procedure as far as I can throw Bill Gates' house, especially given the potential of Murphy's law in my particular case and lack of experience on effects over time.
Eyeglasses are far from a liability when TSHTF and even now -- I'd say just the opposite. They provide some protection against debris, insects, flying branches, and whenever regular safety glasses are unavailable or inconvenient. |
Re: Lasik Surgery
I had all-laser lasik done three years ago, and I would do it again in a second. I now have better than 20-20 vision. Pay a little more and see someone very good. I would definitely recommend the all-laser method. They have been doing this stuff since the 80s... I'm not worried about long term problems.

Re: Lasik Surgery
I would vote no, the tech is still to young. Long term effects are still not known.

Re: Lasik Surgery
I too am considering the procedure. How do you tell
who is good and who is bad? You can't go on price alone. Is there some sort of local or national "ratings" website? |

Re: Lasik Surgery
If you can't afford the eye surgery by laser, I hear they also offer a cheaper version with a taser. :D
ouch! |
Re: Lasik Surgery
I've been considering this for a while too. I notice my vision seems to very slowly be getting worse (nearsighted... vision gets worse the farther away a thing is) the longer or more I wear my glasses. I mainly only wear them at night as I see fine during the day still, but not sharp and crisp by any means.
What's mostly holding me back is the cost of it and still that tiny worry that something could go wrong. :D I know two people personally that have had it done and said it's the best thing they've ever done, and they'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'll do it someday... probably within the next couple of years. |

Re: Lasik Surgery
I had mine done 5 years ago. I only had to have 1 eye done--the other eye is 20/30, whereas the one I had done was 20/550. It's hard to wear glasses because the change in the size of the image from lensed vs normal caused me headaches.
Whatever you do, DON'T GO CHEAP. I paid $2100 for one eye, but that got me a touchup about 6 months later, and 10 years of followup. The only thing I miss is what I called "splintervision"--the ability to pull something REAL CLOSE and examine it. I could grade diamonds before. A small price to pay to not wear glasses. |

Re: Lasik Surgery
Buff, would you mind sharing who exactly did yours? Seeing as you're in Cali, it might be an option for me some day.
Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it here. |
Re: Lasik Surgery
Spent some coin for LASIK on my wife last year. Took her from -8.75 prescription to perfect vision. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
Shop around. Don't use one of those doc in a box joints at some mall. Choose a reputable Dr with an established history with the procedure. Ask him for references from those who were happy as well as dissatisfied. DYODD |

Kruggerand, I used PacifiCare, in Sacramento. Very, very professional.
And they have fresh baked cookies in the waiting room! :bear_thumb: |
Re: Lasik Surgery
Lasik produces corneal scar tissue. Bad for sight. :no_ma:
As your cornea ages so will your scar tissue: Increased sensitivity to light :banghead: Haziness :banghead: Reduced perpherial vision :banghead: A friend's aunt had expensive Lasik. The machine messed up one eye and the doctor offered to do the second for free. :confused_ma: The only way to fix Lasik is more Lasik. More scar tissue. The people who had bad Lasik aren't psoting here. They can't read your post. :tongue_ma: |
Re: Lasik Surgery
I'm in Japan where it costs about 300,000 yen per eye. I know one woman who did it and now her eyes are bulging.
I'd like to try it anyway, but not in Japan. I just want to pop over to California and do it, but how much followup care is required? |
Re: Lasik Surgery
I've thought about doing it, but I know long-term stuff is going to pop up. I'd suggest doing just do one eye if anything. After a while, your brain gets used to the different vision.

Re: Lasik Surgery
There's a simple technique to "see" corneal and lens defects, scar tissue, etc. -- basically blur your eye towards a distant point source of light in the dark (or use a magnifying glass or binoculars if unable to unfocus vision consciously). Ideally, the point light should become a circle of more or less uniform brightness, though some minor spots and nonuniform regions might appear due to congenital defects, healing of corneal abrasion, etc. I'm curious as to what Lasik patients see, if anything; I'd guess it would be some sort of uniform pattern stemming from the microsurgery.

The short-term effect is to not be half blind; if there are problems later, then I'll deal with it then--and they'll probably have just the right solution to sell me. |
